How to make Kalua pork in a slow cooker

Print this recipe
Hawaii's famous Kalua pork is traditionally cooked in a giant pit where it's been slow cooked for hours. But cooking up the melt-in-your-mouth dish no longer requires digging up a pit in your backyard, thanks to an All Recipes slow cooker recipe that claims to be just as good as the real thing. Better yet, this recipe only requires three ingredients.
So grab your slow cooker, a 6-pound pork butt roast, Hawaiian sea salt, some liquid smoke, and prepare to cook one of the simplest and most delicious meals you can.

Prep is only going to take 10 minutes, and all you're going to need is:
- 6 lb pork butt roast
- 1 1/2 tablespoons of Hawaiian sea salt
- 1 tablespoon of Liquid Smoke
- A slow cooker
Now, you're ready to get started:
1.  Pierce the surface of the roast with some carving forks so the salt and smoke can seep right in
2. Rub Hawaiian sea salt all over the roast. The Hawaiian sea salt is a bit pink and has more earthy flavors than other salts.
3. Pour Liquid Smoke on to roast, and continue rubbing into surface to tenderize the meat
4. Cover and cook in slow cooker for 16 to 20 hours, only turning the roast once
5. Remove from slow cooker, shred, and serve this succulent roasted pork
Here's a tip: Liquid Smoke isn't made from chemicals, it's actually a liquefied smoke that gives food a smoky flavor. If your local grocery store doesn't carry it, you can substitute chipotle powder to give your food a smoked taste.
