Char Siu Pork is a wonderful thing.  A slow-cooked, lacquer-red piece of pork in a Chinese restaurant, or hanging in the window of a siu mei (barbeque) shop is a truly beautiful sight. It's also one that can bring on an appetite from nowhere.  The sort of appetite that can only be satiated by spiced pork shoulder, cooked with the kind of ingredients that really make it sing.
The hoisin, ginger, garlic, sesame oil and five-spice are key components to the overall flavor, and the cooking process is a breeze.  For anyone who loves char siu but couldn't begin to contemplate the fairly lengthy and complex process of making it in the traditional fashion; this recipe is your friend.  Don't be tempted to use a leaner cut of pork; according to Food.com this really is a job for the fattier shoulder joint.

This is just delicious served with sticky white rice and a side dish of broccoli, green beans, and water chestnuts, stir-fried quickly in a little sesame oil.  Don't waste the amazing pan juices; pour any liquid into a small saucepan and reduce until thickened slightly, then serve with the meat.  Any leftovers can be diced and turned into a vegetable and char siu egg fried rice, for yet another authentic-tasting Chinese meal that will have you ditching the takeaway menu!
