Ham and cheese sandwiches are American Coffee House Classics. They rank right up at the top of the list with roast beef and pastrami. They're a sweet combination of the regular ham sandwich and the grilled cheese. Being able to crank out an entire casserole dish full of tasty, hot ham and cheese sandwiches in a very short period of time means that this sandwich just got even better. For those who like to make dishes and freeze them, Beyer Beware points out that this dish freezes really well.
Depending on which recipe you decide to follow, you can make these tasty tidbits with seven to eight ingredients. Beyer Beware likes to make the Dijon mustard sauce with fresh onions. If time is short, you can use dried onion like All Recipes and King Hawaiian's. If you go with fresh onions, start by finely dicing one onion and placing it in a pan with a stick of butter. Let this simmer until the onions are soft.

If you are using dry onions, simply melt the butter, add your mustard, Worcestershire and poppy seeds and set your sauce to the side. If you don't care for poppy seeds, All Recipes and King Hawaiian's eliminate that ingredient from their list.
Once the sauce is prepared, take a package of King Hawaiian sweet dinner rolls and cut them in half lengthwise. Do this as one piece; do not separate them into individual rolls. Beyer Beware takes about half the sauce and spreads it on the bottom half of the rolls. All Recipes and King Hawaiian don't place any sauce on the rolls at this point. Next, lay out the ham. You'll need about 1/2 to 1 pound of thinly sliced deli ham.
8 slices of Swiss cheese will cover the ham. Place the slices neatly over the meat.
Once the cheese is in place, place the top of the rolls onto the cheese. Beyer Beware has you spread the other half of the sauce onto the tops of the rolls. All Recipes and King Hawaiian's has you pour the sauce you previously made over the tops of the sandwiches. Bake the sandwiches for 20 minutes either covered with foil or uncovered, depending on how crispy you want them. When they are done, cut them apart into separate sandwiches along the roll lines. A dozen tasty sandwiches are ready to be served. Watch the video below for a full step by step take on this ideal recipe.
