These days it seems like just about every type of snack mix imaginable can be found in your local grocery store. Chex Mix, by far, continues to be the most popular ... and for good reason. Who doesn't love that salty, savory, crunchy, highly addictive snack? If you've never made it at home, here are two options to get you started on what will inevitably be a long-term love affair with homemade snack mixes.

If your family likes the traditional version, or if you prefer salty over sweet, then you may want to try this slow cooker version from Gimme Some Oven. The ingredients are very similar to the original Chex Party Mix recipe from Betty Crocker, but they're stirred together and cooked in the slow cooker for three hours instead of baked. Just like the oven version, be sure to stir it once an hour to avoid burning.
But what if you have more of a sweet tooth? Ever heard of Puppy Chow or Monkey Mix? This version from A Year of Slow Cooking swaps out the savory for the sweet with chocolate and powdered sugar. It also has some healthy ingredients, including dried cranberries, sunflower seeds, and almonds. But consider yourself warned ... this one is super easy to make and seriously hard to stop eating.

In both cases, you'll be able to use your slow cooker in a new way. And if you crave this but don’t want to heat up the whole house, these versions are the way to go. While they aren't necessarily time saving recipes, they are sure to be appreciated by family and friends whenever you serve them.
Enjoy!
