Holiday time is kitchen time and decorating time, so why not combine them? Turning your kitchen creations into (sometimes) edible decor is fun and easy enough for children to do -- invite family and friends over for an evening of delicious decorating!
1. Candy Christmas Lights
Brighten your mood with a string of candy Christmas lights made of almond or peanut M&M's and a box of Mike and Ike fruit candies. Separate all the green Mike and Ikes and cut them in half. Stick each half onto the wide "bottom" of the M&M's, and you have colorful light bulbs!

Next, use green decorating gel to draw a curvy "cord" on a serving platter; place the light bulbs with their bottoms touching the cord. The hardest part about this project is deciding which is more fun -- looking at it or eating it!
2. Elf Snacks
Dip one side of a Cheerio in chocolate, then cover in sprinkles; or mist Cheerios with a little bit of water, then roll them in powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar. Store them in a tiny box (a pill box is perfect) and you have an elf-sized box of doughnuts! See more ideas for elf-sized snacks at The Unconfidential Cook.
3. Tasty Trees
An edible tree might be just the thing if you're decorating a holiday table or ornamenting a gingerbread house. The Artisan Cake Company makes wonderful trees by using green-dyed rice cereal for leaves. Dip grape stems in melted chocolate, then dip their "branches" in the cereal to create a realistic deciduous tree -- use a sugar cone for a more traditional evergreen Christmas tree shape.
4. Whipped Cream Surprises
Add cheer to your holiday cocoa by serving it with whipped cream in festive shapes! Make a batch of homemade whipped cream from your favorite recipe or the one from Sweet Society, then spread it onto a parchment- or wax paper-lined baking sheet. Freeze for at least three hours, then use holiday-shaped cookie cutters to cut the whipped cream into merry individual portions. Freeze again until needed. Yum!
5. Gingerbread Decorations
Don't put away your cookie cutters; Decor Charm has a wonderful recipe for gingerbread cookies and great ideas for turning these holiday treats into decor that will last for years. Preserve your gingerbread people with three coats of varnish to add an adorable touch to gifts or wreaths. Attach a wire to make them into ornaments, or poke two horizontal holes in their chests and string them together as garland.
