It's easy to fall into a breakfast rut with cereal and on-the-go bars. However, what if you want something a little more significant or presentable? Thai Tricks offers some great egg dish tricks, including the popular, "egg in a hole," "egg with a hat" or other names for eggs in fried bread.
The video - which has been viewed half a million times - finds a clever use for an old water or soda bottle to help with this task. By cutting the bottle at its widest part past the neck, you have a perfect sized die to cut bread a large enough opening without further tearing of your bread. Be sure and watch the video for full instructions.
This long-time favorite breakfast dish has a lengthy history. According to Eater, an entry for "egg with a hat" appeared in the 1890s Boston Cooking School Cookbook by Fannie Farmer. This recipe used a two-inch cookie cutter to make the hole in the bread. As cookie cutters aren't quite as common these days, Thai Trick's bottle top makes an excellent substitution.
In addition to this dish, the video also offers tricks for perfectly cooking a poached egg and microwave cooking a soft-boiled egg.
Be sure and pass this along to those who need some extra panache with their morning protein.
