A great recipe isn’t about breaking the mold. Often the best dishes add a subtle twist on something familiar, making something you know and love a little better. A sweet glaze is commonly used as a counterpoint to salty, savory ham. The recipe below offers a tasty, subtly spiced variation that’s sure to become your new favorite.
Pineapple and brown sugar are common ingredients to pair with ham but nutmeg, ginger, and maple syrup make this one especially aromatic. I like to serve it over rice, which soaks up the delicious sauce.

5 hours, 10 minutes
1 (6 1/2 lb., 3 kg) fully cooked ham
1 (8 oz., 226 g) can crushed pineapple in juice
2 tablespoons (30 ml) real maple syrup
1/2 cup (110 g) brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon (1 g) ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon (.5 g) ground nutmeg
Lightly oil the inside of a 7-quart crockpot. Place ham inside.
In a medium bowl, mix all remaining ingredients together. Pour over ham.
Cook, covered, on low for 4 1/2 hours. Remove lid and spoon liquid over top of ham. Recover and cook an additional 30 minutes.
Remove ham from crockpot and rest for 10 minutes. Serve with sauce from the crockpot.

Pro Tip: To create a thicker glaze for the meat, while ham is resting pour the juices from the crockpot into a sauce pan and bring to a boil over medium heat. Cook, stirring for 5 minutes, until thickened.
