We all know an apple a day keeps the doctor away. But, we don't always know the best apple for each circumstance. Yes, these delicious fruits have made their way into lunch boxes, salads, jams and butters over the years. But, choosing the right apple for the right dish can be tricky.
While you might love to snack on a Red Delicious before lunch, it's not the sweetest choice for making a pie. And while the Gala makes a mean apple sauce, it's also not the best for baking. So instead of going through all the trial and error, check out our list below to learn more about each apple and how its sweet flavor can best be worked into a dish.

1. Fuji
The Fuji apple we love so dearly is crisp, sweet apple was actually developed by the Japanese and brought to market in the 1960's. Today, we enjoy this delicious apple as a snack, tossed in a fresh salad or baked. It's versatile and delicious just about any way you can have it.
2. Gala
The Gala apple is originally from New Zealand, but today is grown and eaten all over the world. People love this apple for its mild but sweet taste which makes it great for snacking and cooking, but not so great for baking which requires a little more flavor. We suggest making a sweet, yummy apple sauce with gala apples.
3. Golden Delicious
Its name says it all. The Golden Delicious is a sweet but mellow flavored apple with a gorgeous yellow skin. This all-American apple is as famous for its looks as it is its taste, and its widely used because it's great for snacking, baking and cooking. Try Golden Delicious in a warm apple crumble, coffee cake or in a warm lunch dish -- like a chicken, cheese and apple quesadilla.
4. Red Delicious
Renowned for its' deep red, 'candy apple' color, the Red Delicious were an American household staple for decades. The thing about the Red Delicious is that you either love it or hate it. Its firm, white flesh isn't too sweet or flavorful and its skin is waxy and tough. The flavor pallet makes the Red Delicious good for eating or tossing in a salad, but not so great for cooking or baking with -- unless you want a very milk flavor.
5. Honeycrisp
The Honeycrisp might be a newer Apple to hit the market, but it has taken the world by storm. With a very sweet and refreshing flavor, sometimes reminiscent of pear and a dash of acidity, this apple is great for snacking, cooking and baking alike. Try slow cooking them in the crockpot, baking them in the oven to make apple chips, or turning them into a mouth-watering apple butter.
6. Rome
Rome apples are a beautiful deep or bright red color with a yellow, crisp, and sweet and tangy center. The Rome apple is well known for being a fantastic baking apple, so we suggest whipping up a pie, upside down cake, baked apples or anything else sweet.
7. Braeburn
The Braeburn apple is often a household staple thanks to its crisp tangy flavor that makes it perfect for an afternoon snack or morning meal. We love this apple for snacking and cooking -- try mixing it in a sauce or tossing it in a salad.
8. Pink Lady
The Pink Lady apple, also known as the Cripps Pink, is most often described as tangy and sweet. It's a gorgeous apple to enjoy on its own, but the high sugar content also makes it a perfect sauce and baking apple.
9. Granny Smith
This bright green apple might be the most recognizable of them all. Its beautiful color makes you want to grab it right off of the shelf, and its' sour, sometimes acidic taste is what keeps you coming back for more. Some people love it as a snack, whereas others might prefer it in their hard cider instead. The Granny Smith's complex flavors also make it good for cooking, too.

10. Sonya
The Sonya apple might come from the same line as the Red and Golden Delicious, but its exceptionally sweet flavor sets itself apart. It's a rather new breed of apple, but has become well known for its sugary taste that works wonders when baked and can satisfy just about any sweet-tooth.
