What could be better than a day of fishing and coming home to fry up a true Southern meal featuring the catch of the day? Deep frying gives your fresh fish its best taste with a soft, white flesh and a crispy outer shell.
Most of us who grew up in the South remember large family gatherings, out on a beautiful sunny day, and gathering around the picnic table for a fish fry. Those make for some of our best memories.

Now, as a newer generation, it’s our turn to create memories for own families. With that in mind, here are 7 of the best Southern deep-fried fish recipes that you’ll go crazy for, and your family will too. Don't forget to brew a pitcher of iced tea to water it all down.
1. Southern fish fry (h/t Creole Contessa)
The Creole Contessa fries up fish the way I like it – with lots of yellow mustard, cornmeal, and hot sauce in tow. This Creole chef is not the Barefoot Contessa. She’s in a whole other league. And, as the Creole Contessa says along with so many of us here in Louisiana, “Let the good times roll!”
2. Southern fried catfish (h/t African Bites)
Here’s a finger-licking recipe that’ll get those taste buds sizzling. Fresh catfish fillets are dipped in buttermilk and rolled in a seasoned cornbread mixture. There’s no flour in the batter. Just pure perfection!
3. Deep fried cod (h/t Grandmother's Kitchen)
Fresh cod fillets and self-rising flour deliver simple goodness, deep fried in a pan.
4. Creole mustard-battered tilapia (h/t Mccormick)
Tilapia steals the show here! Zatarain’s Creole mustard and fish fry mixture lend a helping hand.

5. Fish and chips (h/t Tide and Thyme)
Some of us in the South do love the British spin on fried fish – fish and chips. Beer battered fish is fried twice to offer up a smooth, fantastic tasting fish. Any flaky white fish will do here.
6. New Orleans fried catfish (h/t Laura Fuentes)
Here in New Orleans, our life revolves around seafood, in particular, catfish. This fried catfish recipe will knock your socks off! I guarantee it!
7. Deep fried cornmeal crusted fried fish (The Wolfe Pit)
Don't have fresh fish available? Frozen whiting will do in a pinch. The video shows you how it's all done!
