1. Vacuum first
You may not see it, but ceiling fans and air vents can spread dust over your ceiling. Make cleaning the ceiling a lot easier by simply using a brush attachment to vacuum the loose dust on your flat ceiling. By removing the dust first, you won't be dealing with it later.

2. Swiffer the ceiling
If your flat ceiling is not coated with grease or soot, you can often get by with a quick and easy ceiling cleaning. After dusting, simply turn your Swiffer upside down. Use it to "mop" your ceiling. Throw the disposable cloth in the trash and all done!

3. Mix up a homemade cleaning solution
You don't have to purchase a commercial cleaner for your ceiling. This quick and simple homemade cleaning solution for ceilings contains ingredients that cut through residue and grime. In a spray bottle, 1 cup of warm warm water, 4 drops of dish soap, and 2 tablespoons white vinegar. Mix gently to combine. You can use this cleaner with a cleaning rag, but if you have a flat ceiling, a clean microfiber cloth on a mop makes the entire process much easier.

4. Be gentle with a popcorn ceiling
Popcorn ceilings require special care. Many shed very easily when touched and can be ruined by too much moisture. However, they are perfect for catching dust from vents and ceiling fans. The easiest way to remove the dust and brighten your ceiling is with a gentle vacuuming. Don't actually touch the ceiling -- hold the attachment just close enough to suck off the dust.

5. Clean only the spots
Popcorn ceilings cannot be soaked with moisture or the texture will release from the ceiling and end up all over your furniture and floor! Instead of mopping your entire ceiling, you must simply spot clean. Lightly spray the soiled area with a gentle cleaning solution, such as a light mixture of dish soap and warm water. Blot gently with a cleaning cloth. Don't forget to throw on some shades or eye protection - even the gentlest touch can bring a bit of texture down on you.
6. Erase mold with vinegar
Those unsightly splotches on your bathroom ceiling may actually be mold. This humid environment is perfect for mold growth - especially in areas above the shower or bathtub. You don't need to worry, it can easily be cleaned up without harsh chemicals. Simply fill a spray bottle with white vinegar. Spray the affected area. After 10 minutes, wipe clean.
