Dorito Taco Salad is a delightful fusion of Tex-Mex flavors and classic American comfort food. This dish became popular in the Midwest during the 1980s, when creative home cooks started experimenting with convenience foods to create quick and satisfying meals. The combination of crunchy Doritos, savory ground beef, and fresh vegetables makes this salad a crowd-pleaser. It's perfect for potlucks, family gatherings, or a fun weeknight dinner. The vibrant colors and bold flavors are sure to make this a favorite in your household.
Dorito Taco Salad pairs wonderfully with a side of Mexican-style rice or a simple black bean and corn salad. For a refreshing contrast, consider serving it with a chilled avocado and lime soup. A light dessert, such as a fruit sorbet or a tres leches cake, would round out the meal beautifully.

Ingredients
1 pound ground beef
1 packet taco seasoning
1/2 cup water
1 medium red onion, diced
4 cups shredded lettuce
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1 bag (10 oz) Nacho Cheese Doritos, lightly crushed
1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
1/2 cup sour cream

Directions
1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
2. Drain any excess fat from the skillet, then add the taco seasoning and water. Stir to combine and let simmer for about 5 minutes until the mixture thickens.
3. In a large salad bowl, combine the shredded lettuce, diced red onion, and cherry tomatoes.
4. Add the cooked beef mixture to the salad bowl and toss to combine.
5. Just before serving, add the crushed Doritos and shredded cheddar cheese to the salad. Toss gently to mix.
6. Serve with sour cream and salsa on the side, allowing each person to add as much as they like.
Variations & Tips

For a healthier twist, substitute ground turkey or chicken for the beef, and use baked tortilla chips instead of Doritos. You can also add black beans or corn for extra texture and flavor. For a spicier kick, include sliced jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce. If you prefer a vegetarian version, omit the meat and increase the amount of beans and vegetables. Feel free to experiment with different types of cheese or add avocado for creaminess.
