Crispy breaded tofu fillets are a delightful twist on a classic protein dish, perfect for those looking to explore plant-based options. Originating from the idea of creating a vegetarian-friendly alternative to breaded chicken or fish, these tofu fillets offer a satisfying crunch and a savory flavor that even the most skeptical eaters will enjoy. They're a hit in our home, especially when I want to serve something both nutritious and comforting.
These crispy breaded tofu fillets pair wonderfully with a fresh green salad or some roasted vegetables for a balanced meal. You might also consider serving them alongside a tangy coleslaw or a warm quinoa salad. For a heartier option, add a side of mashed potatoes or sweet potato fries. A dipping sauce, like a spicy mayo or a tangy barbecue sauce, can also elevate the flavors and make the meal more engaging for everyone at the table.

1 block of firm tofu
1 cup of breadcrumbs
1/4 cup of all-purpose flour
1/2 cup of unsweetened plant-based milk
1 tablespoon of soy sauce
1 teaspoon of garlic powder
1 teaspoon of onion powder
1/2 teaspoon of paprika
Salt and pepper to taste
2 tablespoons of olive oil

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
Drain the tofu and press it to remove excess moisture. Cut the tofu into fillets, about 1/2 inch thick.
In a shallow bowl, mix the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
In another bowl, combine the plant-based milk and soy sauce.
Place the breadcrumbs in a third bowl.
Dip each tofu fillet into the flour mixture, then into the milk mixture, and finally coat it with breadcrumbs.
Arrange the breaded tofu fillets on the prepared baking tray and drizzle with olive oil.
Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.

Variations & Tips
For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free breadcrumbs and flour. You can also add some nutritional yeast to the breadcrumb mixture for a cheesy flavor. If you prefer a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the flour mixture. For picky eaters, consider serving the fillets with a variety of dipping sauces to let them choose their favorite.
