Vinegar is a popular alternative to expensive chemical cleaning agents, and its uses around the home seem to be endless. The acidic nature of vinegar is particularly suited to removing mineral deposits left behind on faucets, dishwashers and other places where water tends to sit.

1. Sink faucetWhen the spout of a faucet is spraying water in an uneven pattern, it's likely due to an accumulation of deposits on the head of the faucet. Soak a cotton ball in vinegar and secure it to the head of the faucet with a rubber band. Leave the cotton ball in place for up to an hour, then use it to wipe away any remaining residue.
2. DishwasherRemove food stains and hard-water deposits in your dishwasher by filling the detergent cups with vinegar. Run the machine, empty, on a heavy-duty cycle, and the stains and deposits will be gone.
3. Steam ironGet your clogged iron steaming like a tea kettle again by cleaning the vents with vinegar. First, fill the iron's water reservoir about a quarter full of vinegar. Run the iron on full steam along the back of a slotted broiler pan in a back-and-forth motion. The vinegar breaks down the deposits clogging the vents, and the slots on the broiler pan help to scrape them off. By the time the reservoir is empty, do a quick rinse with water, and your iron will be ready to go, full steam ahead!
