Cooktop Cove: 5 ways to clean your home with a grapefruit
By Lillian Teague
Just like lemons and oranges, grapefruit have wonderful cleaning properties. Not only does the high acidity help break through the toughest greasy messes, this citrus leaves behind a fresh, clean scent.
You can use this incredible fruit throughout your entire home as a healthy alternative to commercial cleaners. With all natural ingredients, you won't have to worry about harmful chemicals and fumes.
1. Mix up a citrus cleaner
Combine lemon, orange, lime, and grapefruit peels in any combination with vinegar in a glass jar. Allow to rest for 2 weeks in a dark place. Pour the liquid in a spray bottle and use throughout your home as a citrus oil cleaner and degreaser. Simply spray and wipe off.
2. Create a natural bathtub scrub
The acid of grapefruit combines with the scrubbing power of salt to gently scour away soap scum and grime from your bathtub. With natural disinfecting properties, this all natural cleaner won't leave behind strong odors. Simply sprinkle 1/2 a grapefruit generously with salt. Wet the tub and then sprinkle extra salt on. Use the grapefruit to scrub the tub. Squeezing excess juice on the fixtures and drain will help remove hard water stains and spots. Rinse the salt away to reveal a sparkling bathtub.
3. Craft a powerful homemade cleaning scrub (h/t Crunchy Betty)
This homemade grapefruit cleaning scrub isn't just a powerful cleaner, it uses the part of the grapefruit you usually throw away - the grapefruit peel. Save the peels and let them air dry for this handy scrub. Once you've gathered and dried several peels, pulse them in your food processor or blender to create a powder. Combine with baking soda and borax to create an all natural cleaning scrub for your kitchen and bath.
4. Make your own spray floor cleaner
Using a spray floor cleaner is a quick way to give a light cleaning to your floor. You can use it as a spot cleaner or use it with a microfiber mop to clean the entire floor. Combine in a spray bottle the juice from a squeezed grapefruit, 1/2 cup of vinegar, and 2 tablespoons of salt. Shake and spray. It couldn't be easier!
5. Freshen your garbage disposal
Instead of tossing citrus peels in the trash, throwing them in your garbage disposal and flipping it on will help clean and freshen your disposal. Grapefruit peels add a fresh scent to your kitchen when processed this way. The oils help to release buildup within your garbage disposal and keep food particles from sticking.
