How to make an apple pie in a cast iron skillet

Apple pie is a curious item — it's undebatably a classic, but unlike most things deemed "classic," it varies quite a bit depending on who's making it. There are thousands of recipes, and some of them yield drastically different products. While many apple pies have a crust, this one takes a departure from the classic variety. With a cast iron skillet, you'll be surprised what you can create.
The recipe was formulated by Le Gourmet TV, and they've turned it all into a video, which we've included at the bottom of the page. In case you're not in the mood to watch something, we've broken it all out into images and included them here.

Recipe from LeGourmetTV:
— 1/2 cup (125 mL) butter, at room temperature 
— 2/3 cup (150 mL) brown sugar 
— 1/2 tsp (2 mL) pure vanilla extract 
— 1 large egg 
— 1 cup (250 mL) all-purpose flour 
— 1/2 tsp (2 mL) baking powder 
— 1/2 tsp (2 mL) baking soda 
— 1 1/2 tsp (7 mL) cinnamon 
— 1/4 tsp (1 mL) salt 
— 1/2 cup (125 mL) buttermilk 
— 2 large apples 
— 1 Tbsp (15 mL) turbinado sugar
To make sure that everything's ready when you need it, it's a good idea to get all of your necessary items laid out in front of you. You'll also want to get your oven preheated to 400º. 
Using a mixer, combine your butter and brown sugar. Keep mixing until it's light and fluffy. 
Once it's reached the right consistency, add your vanilla and add your egg. You'll also need to get another bowl and whisk your baking powder, soda, and flour together. Once it's mixed, add it to your mixer bit by bit, switching between your whisked mix and your buttermilk. Combine all of the ingredients. 
When all your mixing's done, slice your apples thinly. Once they're all cut up, you're going to lay them on top of your mix, which should make its way to the bottom of a 9" cast iron skillet. 
Now that your apples are all laid out, it's time to add a final touch: some turbinado (raw) sugar.
