Begin by adding the cheese, ham, and onions on top of the potatoes in a slow cooker. The recipe calls for cheddar, but feel free to experiment with different flavors of cheese. Pepper jack and ham are a great combination as well!
In a separate bowl, mix the condensed soup with a half cup of milk and season with pepper. You can also add chopped garlic if you want a more seasoned dish. This mixture will make up a thick glaze that will coat the top of your potatoes and help them cook in the slow cooker. The recipe calls for milk because it makes the mixture extra creamy, but you can use water if you want a thinner glaze.
After the soup and milk are mixed, pour them on top of the potatoes in the slow cooker. A few hours later, you'll have a pot full of delicious, creamy scalloped potatoes!
Some people might disagree with the use of canned soup to make this dish -- the purpose of using canned soup is to save time. Creating delicious meals with short amounts of preparation time is one of the best things about using a slow cooker! However, if you have more time to prep, try making the cream of mushroom soup from scratch
