Preparation time: 30 minutes
Total time: 4 hours, 30 minutes
Serves: 8
Ingredients
For the apple mixture:
4 or 5 large apples (6 cups when peeled, cored, and diced)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
zest of 1 lemon
2 tablespoons lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
For the topping:
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup light brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter, cut into dice-sized pieces
1 cup walnuts, chopped

Directions
1. In a medium bowl, whisk together all ingredients for the topping minus the butter and walnuts until well blended. Then add in the cubed butter, crumbling with your fingers until the topping has the consistency of coarse crumbs. Loosely stir in chopped walnuts.
2. In a small bowl, whisk together the dry seasonings for the apples.
3. Place the cut apples in the bottom of your slow cooker. Add dry seasonings, then add in the lemon juice. Toss to well coat the apple pieces.
4. Sprinkle the walnut topping over the apple mixture, evenly covering them.
5. Cover and cook on low 4 hours, or high for 2 hours. Then, offset the lid, leaving it slightly open and continue to cook for another hour, or until the top layer has begun to crisp.
