The grates on the kitchen stove can be some of the most irritating home cleaning chores. They seem only to get filthier and filthier. But lovelygrtt has a fantastic home remedy that really works. Even better? It costs as little as $1.
Simply place the grate inside a ziplock bag and add 1/2 cup ammonia. Lovelygrtt explains ammonia can be bought anywhere, including the dollar store. Snap the bag shut and let the grate marinate for 8 hours. Then, place the grate in the kitchen sink and use an old toothbrush to scrub off the dirt.

If you don't have ammonia on hand and want to clean those grates now, try this method from The Maids. All you need is a spray bottle and vinegar. Generously spray the grates with vinegar and allow it to soak in for 10- 15 minutes. Simply wipe down with a clean cloth and voila! Good as new.
The Maids also recommend the baking soda method, which requires only a little bit more effort. Begin by wiping the grates with warm water and a tad of dishwashing detergent. This will remove the initial film. Next, make a thick paste from baking soda and water. Coat the burners with the mixture and wait for 20 minutes as it soaks in. Then, simply use a sponge to scrub the softened residue. When you've sopped up all the nasty bits, thoroughly rinse with water and dry.
The last suggestion comes courtesy of The Kitchn. The blog recommends using polishing cleanser and powder Bon Ami, dish soap, a nylon scrubber, and dish towel. Begin by removing the grates and placing them in the sink. Slowly pour boiling water over the grates to help cut the grease. Next, fill the sink with hot water and a good squirt of dish soap. Soak for 10- 15 minutes. Lastly, dab Bon Ami on a nylon scrubber to remove any remaining grease. If you have trouble with some particularly nasty spots, let the Bon Ami soak in for 5 minutes before scrubbing. Rinse the grates in warm water and dry with a dish towel.
