One way to create a unique design on a cake is to focus on texture. This simple pattern looks classy, and it's simple. The key to this design is straight lines, so you'll need a ruler and a steady hand. The subtle pattern is perfect for elegant parties, and you can dress it up with a little extra sparkle when you want something more.

Quilted cake
Preparation Time: 60 minutes
Total Time: 2 hours
Serves: 6 to 8
Ingredients
2 6-inch cakes (you'll layer them)
cake board
Fondant
Buttercream frosting
Ruler
Measuring tape
Pins
Small balling tool
Palette knife
Edible beads
Directions
1. After baking and cooling your cakes, put a coat of frosting between the two layers of your cake and cover both layers in a crumb coat. Allow to set in the fridge for about 30 minutes to an hour.
2. After your crumb coat has set, add a thicker layer of frosting around your entire cake. Smooth the frosting and place your cake back in the fridge to set up for another 30 minutes.
3. Cover your cake in your choice of fondant and trim the excess from the bottom.
4. Use a measuring tape to mark a line around the bottom part of your cake where the ribbon will sit. Make a mark every 1-1/2 inch all the way around.
5. Use a ruler to make a matching mark at the top of your cake. Do this all the way around. This gives you starting and stopping points.
6. Use a ruler to create diagonal indentations in the fondant. Line up your the ruler edge on the bottom and angle the ruler two dots over on the top. (So your bottom point matches up to the top point two dots to the side). Do this around the entire cake.
7. Repeat step six in the opposite direction to create your quilted look.
8. Dab a bit of water on each corner of your pattern and attach an edible bead. You could skip this step if you want a more subtle design or use edible jewels for more pop.
9. Finish off the design by attaching a ribbon around the bottom edge before adding your final row of beads.
Pro tip: You'll want to make your quilted pattern while the fondant is still soft. If you wait too long it will harden and you won't be able to make your design.
