How to make melted chocolate in the slow cooker (video)

Print this recipe
My grandmother taught me how to melt chocolate using a double boiler. This is the method of simmering water in a pan and placing a metal bowl on top to gently melt the chocolate inside the bowl. In the recipe below, we get that same great result without any of the extra work!
Using this method allows you to melt multiple types of chocolate at once and keeps them all at the perfect consistency, as long as you keep them in the slow cooker. It's perfect for candy and for dipping. The kids will love it and so will you because there are no messy bowls to clean. When you're done, just throw a lid on the mason jars after they've cooled, and they're all set for the next time you need to melt chocolate.

45 minutes
4 16-ounce wide-mouth mason jars
2 cups white chocolate chips
2 cups dark chocolate chips
2 cups milk chocolate chips
2 cups butterscotch chips
Place each of the chips into separate mason jars.
Fill a 6-quart slow cooker with 6 cups of hot water.
Place the mason jars in the slow cooker without their lids. The water should come about half way up the sides. If you need to add more hot water, carefully do so, avoiding getting any water in the jars.
Do NOT cover the slow cooker. Turn on high, and after 40 minutes give the chocolates a good stir.
Keep the heat on and take or dip directly from the mason jars while still in the slow cooker. The temperature will remain consistent, and the melted chocolate will have the perfect consistency.
Note: All slow cookers are a little bit different in temperature and calibration. This recipe was tested in Cooktop Cove's Test Kitchen using this slow cooker, which is available for purchase here.
