How to make Southern fried cabbage

Be sure to use a good, sturdy pot when making Southern fried cabbage to avoid burning the cabbage. Enamelware works well, but so does a good old-fashioned cast-iron pot.
This cabbage is tasty served on its own, but it's even better as a side dish. Serve it with fried chicken and biscuits for a real treat.

You can modify this cabbage to suit your tastes. It's particularly delicious with just a little bit of cayenne pepper thrown into the mix.

Southern Fried Cabbage

5 strips bacon
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 head green cabbage, cored and thinly sliced
1 onion, chopped
1 tablespoon cane syrup
salt and pepper, to taste
Cut the bacon into a large dice.
Heat the vegetable oil in a large, heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat and add the bacon. Cook for about 5 minutes or until the bacon is crisp.
Add the cabbage, onion and cane syrup. Stir to combine.
Cook for about 10 minutes or until the cabbage is tender and the onion is cooked through.
Season to taste with salt and pepper.
