Ground beef has been part of most people's lives since they were children. Meatloaf, spaghetti sauce, goulash and of course, the iconic hamburger sandwich were all commonly served for lunch and dinner throughout the country. Ground beef was readily available, economical, and for reasons unknown, just about everybody loved it.
Some may remember when it was labeled as hamburger instead of ground beef, and the sticker contained no information on the fat content. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines, the difference between the two mixtures is that if the meat is processed and inspected at a USDA-inspected plant, ground beef cannot have extra beef fat added to it, but hamburger can. Also of note is that a maximum of 30% fat by weight is permissible in either hamburger or ground beef. Packers can add seasonings to both mixtures but not extenders, binders, phosphates or water. The delicious recipes that follow will do more than revive your nostalgia for childhood dinners but add contemporary updates, so old becomes new.
