When it comes to your food cravings, every day is sure to be different. The moment hunger strikes morning, noon or night, the last thing anyone wants to deal with is a refrigerator so packed to the brim that nothing can easily be found. If the shelving arrangement and space available in your fridge can no longer contain everything inside, it’s time to come up with a strategy to keep food items organized. While the process of cleaning out your refrigerator can seem daunting, having some easy-to-use tools in place can make a huge difference in the process and over the long term.
Fridge organization begins by transferring strategies that work well in an office to this much colder environment. Plastic bins, labels and even magazine holders that keep paper items in place can just as easily help organize food. The vast majority of these organizational bins are made of plastic, which is perfect for holding up in the fridge and makes for easy cleaning when you have spills or messes. Leave the stress of searching for food far behind, and instead, incorporate these organizational hacks that make it simple to locate food in the fridge and satisfy your hunger on the spot.

Organize in a smart manner with labels
Just as you might use labels to highlight what’s inside a desk drawer, you can also use them to find what you need in the fridge. Begin by separating out food items and beverages into plastic bins. Label each bin with what’s inside, making it easy to reach for what you want without having to search. If the refrigerator includes built-in drawers, you can just as easily apply labels to the exterior of the plastic as well. As an added benefit, these labels can be quickly removed and replaced when it’s time to reorganize.

Use shelf liners to keep things clean and organized
Sometimes the biggest barrier to finding what’s needed in your fridge is the mess that lies below. Over time, food packaging that leaks or food items that have gone bad can leave a sticky mess behind. If you don't quickly attend to this, the mess builds up and makes it even harder for you to locate what you're looking for. Keep the shelves clean by adding shelf liners to each one. Taking shelving units out to add the liners is a great excuse to organize food and beverages at the same time. When messes happen, simply replace the liners without having to worry about scrubbing down the interior of the fridge.

Use magazine racks in the fridge or freezer to instantly organize
A plastic magazine rack is wonderful for keeping papers separated in the office but can be just as effective as an organizational tool in the fridge. The dimensions of a magazine rack are ideal for filling with soda bottles or other food items that stand up vertically for storage. This concept can also be used in the freezer, as the plastic won’t become damaged over time. In a freezer, the rack would work well for holding everything from small ice cream containers to frozen vegetables.

Use plastic storage bins to hold smaller items in the fridge
Small food items are perhaps the most difficult to locate in the fridge no matter what they may be. Keep them all in one place and readily available by storing them in single plastic bins. Purchasing a clear plastic bin works best, as they not only sit flat on the fridge shelving unit but also allow for visibility when you're deciphering the contents within. Plastic bins are excellent for separating fruits and vegetables, and can even be useful for organizing butter and spreads.
