There is something mighty comforting about a supper that asks very little of you and still comes out tasting like it has been fussed over all day. This slow cooker 4-ingredient Amish farm chicken has that old-fashioned thrift and good sense so many Pennsylvania Dutch and Midwestern kitchens are known for: simple pantry staples, patient cooking, and tender chicken tucked into a creamy, peppery gravy. It is the sort of meal you put on after dinner dishes are done from the night before, then let the house fill with the promise of Sunday dinner by late afternoon.

This chicken is especially good spooned over mashed potatoes, buttered egg noodles, or fluffy white rice so none of that rich sauce goes to waste. For the table, I like to add green beans, buttered corn, or a simple cooked carrot dish, and if you have a basket of warm biscuits or homemade bread nearby, nobody will complain one bit.

Ingredients

6 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs

1 packet dry ranch seasoning mix, about 1 ounce
1 can condensed cream of chicken soup, 10.5 ounces
1/2 cup water

Directions

1. Lightly coat the inside of your slow cooker if needed, then arrange the chicken thighs in an even layer in the bottom of the cooker.

2. In a medium bowl, stir together the ranch seasoning, condensed cream of chicken soup, and water until smooth.

3. Pour the sauce over the chicken, making sure the pieces are well coated. Cover and cook on low for 5 to 6 hours or on high for 3 to 4 hours, until the chicken is very tender and cooked through.

4. Once done, spoon some of the sauce over the chicken and serve hot. If you like, let the chicken rest in the sauce for a few minutes before serving so every bite stays moist and flavorful.

Variations & Tips

Make It Extra Peppery: If your family enjoys a little more zip, add a generous grinding of black pepper to the sauce before cooking. It brings out the savory flavor in that creamy gravy without changing the simple spirit of the dish.

Boneless Option: Boneless skinless chicken thighs work nicely too, though they may cook a bit faster and will not have quite the same rich, old-fashioned flavor as bone-in pieces. Start checking for doneness early so they stay tender.

Thicken the Sauce: If you prefer a thicker gravy for spooning over potatoes or noodles, remove the cooked chicken, then whisk 1 tablespoon cornstarch with 1 tablespoon cold water and stir it into the hot sauce in the slow cooker. Cover and cook on high for another 10 to 15 minutes.

Add a Farmhouse Touch: Sliced mushrooms or a layer of onion tucked under the chicken make a nice addition if you want to stretch the dish a little further. It is still humble and homey, just with a little extra flavor from the garden patch.

Best Make-Ahead Tip: This dish reheats beautifully. Store leftovers with plenty of sauce, then warm them gently on the stove or in the microwave so the chicken stays soft and the gravy does not scorch.
