Cooktop Cove: Hands down, this is the only steak marinade you need in your life!
By Holly Owens
There's just something magical about a perfectly marinated steak, isn't there? It's like the marinade whispers all its secrets into the beef, promising to turn it into a tender, flavor-packed masterpiece. And let's be real, after a long day at the office, you deserve a dinner that feels like a treat – something that's both comforting and a bit luxurious without requiring a Gordon Ramsay level of effort. That's where this down-to-earth, Midwest-inspired steak marinade comes into play. It's the classic go-to for those evenings when I’m looking to bring a bit of the steakhouse vibe into my own kitchen. Whether you're wooing your taste buds or aiming to impress your dinner guests, this simple yet scrumptious recipe doesn’t just rise to the occasion – it steals the show!
When it comes to serving, I love pairing my steak with sides that soak up every last drop of flavor. A fluffy baked potato, buttered and ready for action, or a side of grilled asparagus or roasted Brussels sprouts, adds color and crunch. If you're in the mood for some carbs, a lovely wild rice pilaf or a side of creamy mashed potatoes does the trick, making your plate a symphony of textures and tastes.
Steak Marinade
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon honey or brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional for a smoky hint)
- 4 steaks (your choice of cut)
Directions
1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together soy sauce, olive oil, Worcestershire sauce, balsamic vinegar, minced garlic, honey (or brown sugar), dried rosemary, black pepper, onion powder, and smoked paprika if using. Stir until the honey or sugar completely dissolves.
2. Place your steaks in a resealable plastic bag or shallow dish. Pour the marinade over the steaks, ensuring they're completely covered.
3. Seal the bag or cover the dish and let your steaks marinate in the fridge. For optimum flavor, I recommend at least 2 hours, but if you're on top of your game and can prep the night before – go the full 24 hours!
4. When you're ready to cook, remove the steaks from the marinade and let them sit at room temperature for about 20 minutes. It's a small step, but trust me, it makes a difference.
5. Heat your grill or skillet over medium-high heat and cook your steaks to your preferred doneness. Don't forget to let them rest for a few minutes after cooking – patience is a virtue, my friends.
Variations & Tips
- For those who l-o-v-e garlic, don't hesitate to add an extra clove (or two!) to the mix.
- If you’re cutting down on sodium, opt for a low-sodium soy sauce.
- On special occasions, I’ll throw in a splash of red wine into the marinate to make things feel extra fancy.
- Make a larger batch of the marinade and freeze it for future steak nights – your future self will thank you.
- Always remember that the cooking time varies based on the steak's thickness and your desired level of doneness. Keep a meat thermometer handy, and aim for perfection.
Take it from a gal who loves her steak as much as she loves enjoying her evenings: This steak marinade is the key to a stress-free yet spectacular dinner. Happy cooking, steak lovers!
