Cooktop Cove: Learned this from my Asian friend. It's the perfect dessert! Light and refreshing!
By McKayla Davis
Strawberry Sago is a delightful and refreshing dessert that's perfect for warm weather or any occasion when you need a burst of fruity goodness. Originating from Southeast Asia, sago pearls add a unique texture that's both chewy and fun. This recipe is simple to make and can be a fantastic way to introduce loved ones to new flavors. The combination of fresh strawberries and creamy sago is a sweet treat that can bring joy to any family gathering.
Strawberry Sago pairs wonderfully with a light dinner such as grilled chicken or a fresh summer salad. It also makes a great standalone snack for the kids after school or a delightful dessert for a cozy evening at home. For an extra special touch, you can serve it alongside a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
Strawberry Sago
Servings: 4 servings
Ingredients
1/2 cup small sago pearls
2 cups water
1/4 cup sugar
1 cup fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
1 cup coconut milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Pinch of salt
Extra sliced strawberries for garnish (optional)
Mint leaves for garnish (optional)
Directions
1. Rinse the sago pearls under cold water until the water runs clear.
2. In a medium pot, bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add the sago pearls and cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pearls become translucent.
3. Drain the cooked sago and rinse under cold water to remove any excess starch. Set aside.
4. In a large bowl, mix the coconut milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and pinch of salt until the sugar is dissolved.
5. Add the cooked sago and sliced strawberries to the coconut milk mixture, stirring gently to combine.
6. Refrigerate the mixture for at least an hour to allow the flavors to meld and the dessert to chill.
7. Serve chilled, garnished with extra sliced strawberries and mint leaves if desired.
Variations & Tips
For a dairy-free alternative, you can substitute the coconut milk with almond milk or soy milk. If strawberries aren't in season, try using other fruits like mangoes, peaches, or even a mix of berries. For a fun twist, add a tablespoon of chia seeds to the mixture for extra texture and nutrition. If you have picky eaters, blending the strawberries into a puree before adding them can make the texture more uniform.
