Cooktop Cove: This is the dish my spouse adores, and it's my secret weapon for busy days.
By Georgia Lynn
Ah, turkey Salisbury steak – a twist on a classic that has warmed the hearts and bellies of Midwestern families for generations. This beloved dish, originally a method to stretch meat during lean times, has become a hearty favorite on dinner tables across the heartland. With a slow cooker, we can keep the tradition alive while making it easy for our busy schedules. Using turkey instead of beef is a healthier option without losing that comforting, home-cooked flavor. Picture cold winter evenings with the wind howling outside, and you gathered with family around the table, enjoying this delightful meal. It's truly a connection to simpler times.
This turkey Salisbury steak pairs wonderfully with creamy mashed potatoes, soaking up the rich gravy perfectly. A side of buttered green beans or sweet corn adds a nice crunch and a splash of color to your plate. For a bit of tanginess, consider a simple cucumber salad. And don’t forget a warm, crusty roll to pull it all together – it’ll remind you of supper at Grandma’s house.
Slow Cooker Turkey Salisbury Steak
Servings: 4
Ingredients
1 pound ground turkey
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1/4 cup finely chopped onion
1 large egg
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 (10.5-ounce) can cream of mushroom soup
1/4 cup beef broth
1 tablespoon ketchup
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
Directions
1. In a large bowl, combine ground turkey, breadcrumbs, onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix everything together until well blended.
2. Shape the mixture into four oval patties, about 1/2-inch thick.
3. In a skillet over medium heat, brown the patties on both sides, about 3 minutes per side. They don't need to be cooked through, just browned.
4. Transfer the patties to the slow cooker.
5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, beef broth, ketchup, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, and dried thyme until smooth.
6. Pour the mixture over the patties in the slow cooker.
7. Cover and cook on low for 4-5 hours, or until the patties are cooked through and tender.
8. Serve the turkey Salisbury steaks with the gravy spooned over the top. Enjoy with your favorite sides!
Variations & Tips
For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free breadcrumbs and make sure your cream of mushroom soup is also gluten-free. You can replace the ground turkey with ground chicken if you prefer. For a more robust flavor, add a splash of red wine to the gravy mixture. Finally, if you have any mushrooms on hand, slice them up and add them to the slow cooker for additional texture and flavor.
