Grilled cheese hot dogs are the perfect blend of two all-time American favorites - hot dogs and grilled cheese sandwiches. This recipe takes me back to lazy summer afternoons when the kids were out playing and the smell of sizzling hot dogs filled the air. Combining the cheesy goodness with the savory delight of hot dogs creates an irresistible treat that’s easy to make and adored by all ages. These grilled cheese hot dogs will surely bring a smile to anyone's face, capturing the essence of Midwestern comfort food.
These grilled cheese hot dogs pair wonderfully with classic sides like potato salad or a fresh garden salad. You can also serve them with baked beans or crispy homemade fries for a full hearty meal. For a refreshing touch, consider adding a chilled glass of lemonade or iced tea to complete your nostalgic summertime feast.
Grilled Cheese Hot Dogs
Servings: 4
Ingredients
4 hot dogs
4 hot dog buns
8 slices of American cheese
2 tablespoons of butter
Optional: mustard, ketchup, relish, or your favorite toppings
Directions
Preheat your grill to medium heat.
Slice each hot dog bun down the middle (but not all the way through) to create a pocket for the hot dog.
Place a slice of American cheese on each side of the buns' interior, ensuring the cheese wraps around the hot dog when placed inside.
Insert the hot dogs into the buns and gently press to adhere the cheese to the hot dogs.
Lightly butter the outside of each hot dog bun.
Grill the hot dogs with the cheese side up to start, until the cheese begins to melt, about 3-4 minutes.
Carefully flip the hot dogs, grilling the other side until the buns are golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 more minutes.
Once grilled to your liking, remove them from the grill. Serve immediately with your desired toppings.
Variations & Tips
For a smoky twist, try using cheddar or pepper jack cheese instead of American cheese. You can also add a strip of grilled bacon inside the buns for an extra layer of flavor. If you’re feeling adventurous, try adding sautéed onions, jalapeños, or even a drizzle of BBQ sauce. This recipe is very adaptable to different tastes and preferences, so feel free to get creative!
