Cooktop Cove: I think this is the tastiest I've ever made this dish, it looks so good.
By Morgan Reed
Slow cooker cube steak is a comforting and easy-to-make dish that hails from the heart of American home cooking. This recipe transforms an affordable cut of meat into a tender, flavorful meal with minimal effort. It’s perfect for busy weeknights or when you want a hearty, no-fuss dinner that still feels a bit special. By slowly simmering the cube steak, the connective tissues break down, creating succulent, melt-in-your-mouth bites that are simply irresistible.
This slow cooker cube steak pairs beautifully with a variety of sides. For a well-rounded meal, consider serving it with creamy mashed potatoes, which will soak up the delicious gravy. A side of steamed green beans or roasted carrots can add a fresh, vibrant touch to your plate. If you’re looking for something a bit heartier, buttered egg noodles or a simple rice pilaf can also complement the dish nicely.
Slow Cooker Cube Steak
Servings: 4
Ingredients
4 pieces of cube steak
1 large onion, sliced
2 cups beef broth
1 can (10.75 oz) cream of mushroom soup
1 packet (1 oz) dry onion soup mix
3 cloves garlic, minced
Salt and pepper to taste
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)
Directions
1. In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Season the cube steaks with salt and pepper, then brown them in the skillet for about 2-3 minutes on each side.
2. Transfer the browned cube steaks to the slow cooker.
3. In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and minced garlic; sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
4. Pour in the beef broth to deglaze the skillet, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom. Add the cream of mushroom soup and dry onion soup mix, stirring well to combine.
5. Pour the soup mixture over the cube steaks in the slow cooker.
6. Cover and cook on low for 7-8 hours or on high for 4-5 hours, until the meat is tender.
7. Before serving, adjust the seasoning with additional salt and pepper if needed. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired.
Variations & Tips
For a richer flavor, you can substitute red wine for part of the beef broth. Adding sliced mushrooms alongside the onions introduces an earthy depth to the dish. If you prefer a lighter gravy, try using a can of condensed golden mushroom soup instead of cream of mushroom. For those who enjoy a bit of heat, a few dashes of hot sauce or a sprinkle of red pepper flakes can add a mild kick. Lastly, if you’re gluten-free, be sure to use a gluten-free cream of mushroom soup and check that your beef broth and onion soup mix are gluten-free as well.
