Cooktop Cove: Dead simple and easy to make! Always pleases a crowd!
By Holly Owens
Calzones are like the perfect little pizza pockets that bring a taste of Italy right to your kitchen. Growing up, Friday nights were always pizza nights in our house, but as I got older and busier, I found myself craving something a little different yet just as comforting. Enter the calzone! It's a fun twist on the classic pizza, and it's perfect for those nights when you want something easy yet satisfying. Plus, it's a great way to use up any leftover pizza ingredients you might have in the fridge.
This Easy Baked Pepperoni and Cheese Calzone pairs wonderfully with a fresh green salad drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette. You might also want to serve it with a side of marinara sauce for dipping, which adds a nice tangy contrast to the cheesy goodness inside the calzone. If you're feeling a bit indulgent, a side of garlic bread can make the meal extra hearty. And of course, a glass of your favorite red wine or a cold soda can round out this comforting meal perfectly.
Easy Baked Pepperoni and Cheese Calzone
Servings: 4
Ingredients
1 pound pizza dough
1 cup marinara sauce
1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup sliced pepperoni
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 egg (for egg wash)
Directions
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Roll out the pizza dough on a floured surface into a large circle, about 12 inches in diameter.
Spread the marinara sauce over half of the dough, leaving a 1-inch border around the edge.
Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese over the sauce, then layer the pepperoni slices on top.
Fold the other half of the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Pinch the edges together to seal the calzone.
In a small bowl, beat the egg with a splash of water to make an egg wash. Brush the top of the calzone with the egg wash.
Sprinkle the Parmesan cheese and Italian seasoning over the top of the calzone.
Carefully transfer the calzone to the prepared baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
Let the calzone cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
Variations & Tips
For a veggie version, swap the pepperoni for sautéed mushrooms, bell peppers, and onions. You can also add some spinach for a pop of color and nutrients. If you're a fan of spice, try adding some red pepper flakes or sliced jalapeños to the filling. For a more gourmet twist, consider using a mix of cheeses like provolone or gouda along with the mozzarella. And if you're short on time, you can use store-bought pizza dough or even crescent roll dough for a quicker prep.
