Calzones are a delightful twist on pizza, originating from Italy and perfect for a family meal. This low carb version with ham and cheddar is not only delicious but also aligns with a healthier lifestyle. It's a wonderful way to enjoy a crispy, flaky, and golden treat without the extra carbs. Perfect for a cozy dinner or a fun weekend cooking project with the kids.
These calzones pair beautifully with a fresh green salad tossed with a light vinaigrette. You might also consider serving them with a side of roasted vegetables or a simple tomato basil soup for a comforting and complete meal.
Low Carb Ham and Cheddar Calzones
Servings: 4
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups almond flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
2 tablespoons cream cheese
1 large egg
1 cup diced ham
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Directions
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large microwave-safe bowl, combine the mozzarella and cream cheese. Microwave on high for about 1-2 minutes, or until melted. Stir until smooth.
Add the almond flour, baking powder, salt, and egg to the melted cheese mixture. Mix until a dough forms. You may need to knead it with your hands to fully combine.
Divide the dough into four equal parts. Roll each piece into a circle about 1/4 inch thick.
In a separate bowl, mix together the diced ham, shredded cheddar, oregano, and garlic powder.
Spoon the ham and cheddar mixture onto one half of each dough circle, leaving a small border around the edge.
Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Press the edges together to seal, and crimp with a fork.
Place the calzones on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops with the beaten egg.
Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the calzones are golden brown and crispy.
Allow to cool slightly before serving.
Variations & Tips
For a vegetarian option, replace the ham with sautéed mushrooms or spinach. If you have picky eaters, you can customize the fillings with their favorite ingredients, like pepperoni or cooked chicken. For an extra kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the filling. You can also serve these with a side of marinara sauce for dipping.
