Beef Sloppy Joe Tater Tot Casserole is a delightful fusion of two classic comfort foods that have been beloved in American households for decades. The Sloppy Joe, with its origins tracing back to the early 20th century, is known for its savory and slightly sweet beef filling. When combined with the crispy texture of tater tots, this dish becomes a hearty and satisfying meal perfect for family dinners or casual gatherings. This casserole is not only easy to prepare but also offers a nostalgic taste that resonates with both young and old alike.
This casserole pairs wonderfully with a fresh green salad, providing a crisp contrast to the rich and hearty main dish. You might also consider serving it with steamed vegetables like green beans or broccoli to add a nutritious balance. For a bit of extra indulgence, a side of buttery cornbread can complement the savory flavors beautifully.
Beef Sloppy Joe Tater Tot Casserole
Servings: 6
Ingredients
1 pound ground beef
1 small onion, diced
1 green bell pepper, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon mustard powder
Salt and pepper to taste
3 cups frozen tater tots
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Directions
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula.
Add the diced onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook until the vegetables are soft, about 5 minutes.
Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard powder, salt, and pepper. Let the mixture simmer for about 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
Transfer the beef mixture to a 9x13 inch baking dish, spreading it evenly.
Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer over the beef mixture.
Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, or until the tater tots are golden brown and crispy.
Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the top and return to the oven for an additional 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.
Variations & Tips
For a spicier version, add a diced jalapeño or a teaspoon of chili powder to the beef mixture. You can also substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option. For a vegetarian version, use a plant-based ground meat alternative and add extra vegetables like mushrooms or zucchini. Consider topping the casserole with sliced green onions or a dollop of sour cream for added flavor.
