Cooktop Cove: Just discovered a new way to cook brats, and it's a total game-changer!
By Holly Owens
This dish brings the heart back to Sunday afternoons with its nostalgic comfort. Growing up in the Midwest, brats were a staple at family gatherings and cookouts. This Rustic Countryside Brats with Sweet Onions recipe is my take on a classic, perfect for those cozy weekends when you want something hearty and satisfying. The combination of caramelized onions, savory bratwursts, and a hint of beer makes this dish a true comfort food delight. It's a great way to bring a touch of countryside charm to your suburban kitchen.
These Rustic Countryside Brats pair beautifully with a side of creamy mashed potatoes or a fresh green salad. For a more traditional touch, serve them with sauerkraut or a warm potato salad. A crusty loaf of bread is perfect for soaking up the delicious broth, and don't forget a cold beer to complement the flavors!
Rustic Countryside Brats with Sweet Onions
Servings: 4-6 servings
Ingredients
6 bratwursts
2 large onions, thinly sliced
2 cloves of garlic, minced
1 tablespoon of olive oil
2 tablespoons of butter
12-ounce bottle of beer (pilsner or lager)
1 cup of beef broth
1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard
Salt and pepper to taste
Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
In a large oven-safe skillet or Dutch oven, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat.
Add the sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 10-15 minutes.
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
Nestle the bratwursts among the onions in the skillet.
Pour in the beer and beef broth, then stir in the Dijon mustard.
Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Bring the mixture to a simmer, then transfer the skillet to the preheated oven.
Bake uncovered for 30-40 minutes, until the brats are cooked through and the sauce has thickened slightly.
Garnish with fresh parsley if desired before serving.
Variations & Tips
For a different flavor profile, try using a dark beer like a stout or porter instead of a pilsner or lager. You can also add sliced bell peppers or mushrooms along with the onions for extra veggies. If you're looking for a gluten-free option, substitute the beer with a gluten-free variety or use additional beef broth. For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes or serve with a side of spicy mustard.
