Cooktop Cove: How to turn a meatball sub into a delicious casserole
By Carmen Martínez
This recipe, by Life with the crust off, it's a really creative twist on one of the best comfort meals ever: a delicious, juicy meatball sub turned into a savory, crunchy-on-top casserole. Life with the crust off's recipe isn't only simple, it also just requires 4 ingredients thanks to the premade marinara sauce and the frozen meatballs.
Of course, you can always make your own marinara and meatballs - we know homemade always sounds better, but this will save you lots of time and having to worry about preparing in advance.
While both Life with the crust off and Pillsbury instruct to use biscuits cut in small to medium pieces, My Recipes recommends using a loaf of Italian bread cut into thick slices, and All Recipes suggests using frozen garlic bread instead.
Once you have your biscuit pieces or bread in your casserole dish, it's time to pour the marinara sauce of your liking on top. My Recipes suggests adding a little bit of mayonnaise and cream cheese to the marinara to thicken it up. You can also give your meatball sub casserole a more Summery touch with barbecue sauce instead of marinara, as suggested by Recipe Runner
Finally, place your frozen meatballs on top of the biscuits and sauce and cover it with grated cheese. Life with the crust off uses mozzarella, but you can mix it up with some grated Italian cheese mix and Parmesan as Pillsbury does.
Now it's time for the baking! While Life with the crust off instructs to bake it in an already preheated oven to 375F for 35-40 minutes, most recipes recommend just baking it at 350F. This mostly depends on the oven you have, so check your meatballs from time to time to be sure you get a perfect meatball sub casserole.
That's it! And look at that deliciously melted cheese over the meatballs. And it was THAT easy! Please, be sure to SHARE this recipe so your friends can also enjoy this awesome idea at home!
