Cooktop Cove: Make Oreo cheesecake at home in your microwave
By August West
Cheesecake has been enjoyed by people for many decades, but up until the introduction of the microwave, it had never been so easy to make. As with nearly every modern cheesecake, this one uses cream cheese to get things going, but it quickly deviates from the norm by adding America's favorite cookie: the Oreo. There's something practically narcotic about these miniature morsels, as evidenced by a Connecticut College lab rat study which, IBTimes notes, "found that rats formed an equally strong bong between the pleasurable effects of eating Oreo cookies as they did with the effects of taking drugs like cocaine or morphine."
If you end up getting addicted to this all-too-easy recipe, we wouldn't blame you.
In one bowl, she starts with 3 tbsp. cream cheese — it's probably the most common ingredient found in cheesecakes, save the next one.
What cheesecake would be complete without sugar? She uses 1 tbsp. for this recipe.
While one egg white is what this recipe calls for, it looks like they got a little messy when removing the yolk. Judging by the end product, though, it's clear that this minor mishap didn't affect the result.
The last ingredient added before blending is 1 tsp. of flour. Be sure to blend the mixture completely.
After blending, the host adds 1/3 cup of crushed oreos. Don't drive yourself nuts looking for these on store shelves — you probably won't find them! Instead, buy a package of full cookies and crush them yourself. That way, you'll still have oreos to eat once the cheesecake's all gone!
Next, she takes the mug she'll be cooking the cake in and adds crushed oreos to the bottom of the cup to make a base. Don't forget this step — it ends up being the best part!
After spooning what was in her mixing bowl onto the oreos at the bottom of the mug, she microwaves the concoction in 15-second increments. This helps with quality control. You'll know it's done when the edges are firm, but the center still jiggles a bit. At this point, you'll want to let it cool to room temperature before refrigerating it for two hours before serving.
It's time for finishing touches! Gemma's recipe calls for a dollop of whipped cream on top of the finished cake, before dusting some more crushed Oreo cookies over it all. It's safe to say that the finished product is a minor masterpiece.
