Cooktop Cove: You're gonna love waking up to this dish in the morning

Making homemade yogurt may seem like a daunting task, but it can be a rewarding and healthy practice. Not only is homemade yogurt a healthy substitute for store-bought varieties with added sugars and preservatives, but it also allows you to tailor the flavor and texture to your liking. Plus, making yogurt in a slow cooker is incredibly easy and convenient, requiring minimal hands-on time.
Growing up, my grandmother always made homemade yogurt for us, and I remember eagerly waiting for it to cool so I could have a taste. The creamy and tangy flavor was unlike anything I had ever tasted before, and I always looked forward to having it for breakfast or as a snack. As I got older and started relying more on store-bought yogurt, I found myself missing the creamy texture and unique flavor of my grandmother's homemade yogurt. That's when I decided to start making my own, and I haven't looked back since. Trust me, once you try making your own yogurt, you'll never go back to store-bought varieties.
Slow Cooker Yogurt
Ingredients:
- 8 cups of whole milk
- 1/2 cup of plain yogurt with live active cultures
- 1/4 cup of honey (optional)
Note: If you use skim milk, the end result will turn on thinner.
Instructions:
1. Pour the whole milk into your slow cooker, cover with the lid, and set it to low heat. Let it heat for approximately 2-3 hours, until the temperature reaches 180°F.
2. Once the temperature has been reached, turn off the slow cooker and let the milk cool down to 110°F.
3. In a separate bowl, combine the plain yogurt and honey (if using). Once the milk has cooled, add this mixture to the slow cooker and stir well.
4. Replace the lid and wrap the slow cooker with a towel or blanket to keep the heat in. Let the yogurt mixture sit for 8-12 hours, or overnight.
5. Once the yogurt has thickened and set, transfer it to a container and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
6. Serve as is, or add your favorite toppings such as fresh fruit or granola.
Making homemade yogurt in a slow cooker may seem like a long process, but it's actually quite simple and requires minimal hands-on time. The end result is a creamy and flavorful yogurt that's not only healthy but also customizable to your taste preferences. Give this recipe a try and enjoy the deliciousness of homemade yogurt!
