Cooktop Cove: Hands down, this Dr Pepper sauce is the only kind my hubby will eat!
By Holly Owens
So, there’s something magical that happens when you mix the nostalgia of a classic soda with the smoky depth of BBQ sauce – and that’s exactly what we’re diving into today! Dr Pepper BBQ Sauce is this unexpectedly perfect combination of sweet, tangy, and smoky flavors that just elevates whatever it's slathered on to a whole new level of delicious. Growing up in the Midwest, BBQs and family gatherings were the cornerstones of summer, and Dr Pepper was always the quirky, less chosen soda that somehow made every party more memorable. Fast forward to my 30s, and I’m still finding ways to bring that little bit of whimsy into my cooking. Whether you’re looking to shake up your BBQ game or just craving a fun twist on a classic sauce, this one's for you!
This sweet and spicy sauce pairs beautifully with so much more than just your average grilled fare – though it's divine on ribs and pulled pork. Try it as a dipping sauce for chicken fingers, slathered on a burger, or even brush some on a meatloaf for a twist that'll get people talking. My personal favorite? Pouring it over a block of cream cheese and serving it with crackers for a quick appetizer that'll have your guests asking for the recipe. For sides, you can’t beat classic corn on the cob, a fresh coleslaw, or some garlic roasted potatoes.
Dr Pepper BBQ Sauce
Servings: Makes about 2 cups
Ingredients:
- 1 can (12 ounces) Dr Pepper soda
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1/2 tablespoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- A pinch of cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
Directions:
1. Grab a medium saucepan and pour in the can of Dr Pepper. Set it over medium heat and bring it to a gentle simmer. Let it bubble away for about 15-20 minutes, or until the soda is reduced by half. This concentrates that iconic Dr Pepper flavor and makes the base of your sauce super rich!
2. Once reduced, add the ketchup, apple cider vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce to the pan and give it a good stir to combine.
3. Next, sprinkle in the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, ground black pepper, and salt, and of course, the cayenne if you’re using it. Stir again, making sure there are no spice clumps finding corners to hide in.
4. Let the mixture return to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. You want this lovely concoction to thicken and become sauce-consistency, which will take about 20-25 minutes of patience and occasional stirring.
5. After it's thickened to your liking, remove the pan from the heat. You can use the sauce immediately, or let it cool down before transferring it to an airtight container for storage. It’ll keep in the refrigerator for up to two weeks—not that it ever lasts that long in my house!
Variations & Tips:
- For a tangier twist, you can add a tablespoon of mustard or a splash more vinegar to the mix.
- If you're watching your sugar, try using a diet version of Dr Pepper for a similar flavor with fewer carbs.
- Love a smoky taste? Add a dash of liquid smoke for an even deeper flavor profile.
- This sauce can be canned if you’re into preserving. Just prepare it as you would any other canning recipe, and process in a boiling water bath for 15 minutes.
- And remember, the sauce will thicken a bit more as it cools, so if it seems a tad runny after cooking, don't fret!
So, there you have it, my dear BBQ enthusiasts – a delectable Dr Pepper BBQ Sauce that’s sure to give a pop of excitement to your next cookout. Just don’t blame me if you become ‘that person’ who brings the sauce everyone can’t stop talking about! Happy cooking!
