Cooktop Cove: My mama used to make these and I always thought they were the fanciest thing!
By McKayla Davis
The Monte Cristo sandwich is a delightful twist on the classic French croque-monsieur. With a history as rich as its flavor, this sandwich is a blend of sweet and savory that dances on the taste buds. It's believed that the Monte Cristo made its first appearance on American menus in the 1930s and became a staple in California's Disneyland in the 1960s. It's an elegant yet comforting meal that's perfect for a family brunch, a pick-me-up lunch, or when you're simply craving something a little bit different. The batter-dipped, lightly fried bread encases melty cheese and warm ham or turkey, which is then finished with a dusting of powdered sugar and served with a side of jam. It's a meal that'll gather the family around the table with wide-eyed anticipation.
To accompany your homemade Monte Cristo sandwiches, consider a fresh fruit salad to balance the savory richness. A crisp green salad or a steaming bowl of tomato soup can also be wonderful complements. And for dipping, a small dish of raspberry or strawberry jam will add a perfect touch of sweetness.
Monte Cristo Sandwich
Servings: 4
Ingredients
- 8 slices of white bread, preferably a day old
- 4 slices of Swiss cheese
- 4 slices of turkey
- 4 slices of ham
- 3 eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
- A dash of salt
- Unsalted butter or vegetable oil, for frying
- Powdered sugar, for dusting
- Raspberry or strawberry jam, for serving
Directions
1. Lay out the slices of bread and top four of them with a slice of Swiss cheese each.
2. Now, add the turkey and ham slices on top of the cheese – feel free to use both or just one type of meat.
3. Top with the remaining slices of bread to form four sandwiches.
4. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, flour, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
5. Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a tablespoon of butter or oil.
6. While the skillet warms up, dip each sandwich in the egg batter, letting the excess drip off.
7. Place each dipped sandwich in the skillet and cook until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side. You want that cheese to be nice and melty.
8. Once cooked, move the sandwiches to a cutting board and let them rest for a minute.
9. Cut each Monte Cristo diagonally, dust with powdered sugar, and serve these sweet and savory delights with a side of your favorite jam.
Variations & Tips
- For children or those who prefer it less sweet, you can skip the powdered sugar.
- Gluten-free flour and bread can be used for those with dietary restrictions.
- For a lighter version, try swapping the full-fat cheese for a reduced-fat option and using cooking spray instead of butter for frying.
- If desired, add a slice of tomato or some greens to each sandwich for an added veggie boost.
- Monte Cristo sandwiches can also be made in a waffle iron for a fun and easy alternative to frying.
- Encourage the family to personalize their sandwiches by choosing their favorite meats or cheese.
- Finally, remember, the most delicious meals are made with love, so don't forget to share this joyful cooking experience with your loved ones.
