Cooktop Cove: We’ve named it 'Tot-topia' because it’s crispy, cheesy, and completely irresistible!
By Georgia Lynn
Ah, the classic tater tot beef bake—a dish that takes me back to the bustling kitchens of my childhood in the heart of the Midwest. This comforting casserole is a staple in many homes, especially during the chilly months when the warmth of the oven and the savory aroma fill the house with a sense of coziness. Originally born out of the need to create a hearty, satisfying meal with simple ingredients, this dish has been a beloved favorite at family gatherings and potlucks for generations. It's the kind of meal that brings everyone to the table, eager to share stories and laughter over a delicious plate of nostalgia.
This tater tot beef bake pairs beautifully with a crisp green salad or some steamed green beans to add a touch of freshness to the meal. A side of buttery corn on the cob or a warm, crusty bread would also complement the rich flavors of the casserole. For a true Midwestern feast, consider serving it alongside some homemade applesauce or a tangy coleslaw.
Classic Tater Tot Beef Bake
Servings: 6
Ingredients
1 pound ground beef
1 small onion, chopped
1 can (10.5 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup
1/2 cup sour cream
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 package (32 ounces) frozen tater tots
Salt and pepper to taste
Directions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
In a large skillet, cook the ground beef and chopped onion over medium heat until the beef is browned and the onion is tender. Drain any excess fat.
Stir in the cream of mushroom soup and sour cream, mixing well. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Spread the beef mixture evenly in a 9x13 inch baking dish.
Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the beef mixture.
Arrange the tater tots in a single layer on top of the cheese.
Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the tater tots are golden brown and crispy.
Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving.
Variations & Tips
For a little extra flavor, try adding a cup of frozen mixed vegetables to the beef mixture before baking. You can also swap out the cream of mushroom soup for cream of chicken or cheddar cheese soup for a different twist. If you like a bit of spice, sprinkle some crushed red pepper flakes or add a dash of hot sauce to the beef mixture. For a cheesy crust, add an extra layer of cheese on top of the tater tots before baking.
