Cooktop Cove: This 'Amish Hearthside Favorite' gets compliments every single time—it’s the ultimate comfort food!
By Holly Owens
Amish Beef and Mushroom Bake is one of those comforting dishes that brings back memories of cozy family dinners. Growing up in the Midwest, I was always surrounded by hearty meals that could feed a crowd and warm you up from the inside out. This dish combines tender beef with earthy mushrooms in a creamy sauce, all baked to perfection. It's perfect for those busy weeknights when you want something delicious but don't have hours to spend in the kitchen. Plus, it's a great way to use up any mushrooms you might have lingering in the fridge!
This dish pairs wonderfully with a simple green salad or some steamed green beans to add a pop of color and freshness to your plate. If you're in the mood for something a bit heartier, serve it with a side of buttery mashed potatoes or some crusty bread to soak up all that delicious sauce.
Amish Beef and Mushroom Bake
Servings: 4
Ingredients
1 pound ground beef
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
1 can (10.5 ounces) cream of mushroom soup
1/2 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Salt and pepper to taste
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
Directions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, and sauté until the onion is translucent.
Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned. Drain any excess fat.
Stir in the sliced mushrooms and cook for another 5 minutes, until the mushrooms are tender.
Add the cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, and Worcestershire sauce to the skillet. Stir until everything is well combined. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Transfer the beef and mushroom mixture to a baking dish. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top.
In a small bowl, mix the breadcrumbs with a little olive oil or melted butter, then sprinkle over the cheese layer.
Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the breadcrumbs are golden brown.
Let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!
Variations & Tips
For a lighter version, you can use ground turkey instead of beef and substitute Greek yogurt for sour cream. If you're a fan of spice, add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce to the beef mixture. You can also mix in some frozen peas or corn for added veggies and color. For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free breadcrumbs or omit them altogether.
