Southern Peach Crumb Cake is a delightful treat that brings back memories of warm summer afternoons spent on the porch with family. This cake is a staple in many Southern households, cherished for its sweet, juicy peaches and buttery crumb topping. It's a recipe passed down through generations, often made when peaches are in season and at their juiciest. Making this cake is like taking a step back in time, savoring the simple pleasures of life and the bounty of the land. It's perfect for those who want to bring a taste of Southern hospitality into their homes.
This peach crumb cake pairs beautifully with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of freshly whipped cream. For a true Southern experience, serve it alongside a glass of sweet tea or a cup of freshly brewed coffee. It's also lovely with a side of fresh berries or a light fruit salad to complement the sweetness of the cake.
Southern Peach Crumb Cake
Servings: 8
Ingredients
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup milk
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3-4 ripe peaches, peeled, pitted, and sliced
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Directions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
In a medium bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, and salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Set aside 1/2 cup of this mixture for the crumb topping.
To the remaining flour mixture, add the baking powder, milk, egg, and vanilla extract. Stir until just combined.
Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan, spreading it evenly.
Arrange the peach slices on top of the batter in a circular pattern.
In a small bowl, mix the reserved crumb mixture with the brown sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle this over the peaches.
Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
Variations & Tips
For a twist, try adding a handful of chopped pecans or walnuts to the crumb topping for extra crunch. You can also substitute the peaches with other seasonal fruits like nectarines or plums. If you prefer a spicier cake, add a pinch of nutmeg or ginger to the batter. For a more decadent version, drizzle a simple glaze made from powdered sugar and milk over the cooled cake.
