Cooktop Cove: This is a sauce I've been working on for years! Finally think I got it
By Georgia Lynn
In the heart of the Midwest, where the summers are long and the gatherings are plentiful, hot dog chili sauce is a staple that brings back memories of county fairs and family picnics. This thick, chunky, and bubbly sauce is more than just a topping; it's a testament to the rich culinary traditions of our region. Passed down through generations, this recipe is perfect for those who want to add a hearty, flavorful touch to their hot dogs, reminiscent of simpler times and shared laughter.
This hot dog chili sauce pairs beautifully with a side of classic coleslaw or a fresh corn salad. For a truly Midwestern feast, serve it alongside baked beans and potato chips. Don't forget a tall glass of iced tea or lemonade to wash it all down. And if you're feeling indulgent, a slice of apple pie for dessert will round out the meal perfectly.
Midwestern Hot Dog Chili Sauce
Servings: 8
Ingredients
1 pound ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
1/2 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon mustard powder
Salt and pepper to taste
Directions
In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat until fully cooked, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon.
Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet, cooking until the onion is translucent and the garlic is fragrant.
Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and mustard powder.
Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens and becomes bubbly.
Season with salt and pepper to taste, adjusting the seasoning as needed.
Serve hot over your favorite hot dogs, and enjoy the taste of tradition.
Variations & Tips
For a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a few dashes of hot sauce. If you prefer a smoother texture, you can blend the sauce slightly with an immersion blender before serving. For a vegetarian version, substitute the ground beef with finely chopped mushrooms or a plant-based ground meat alternative. This sauce also makes a great topping for baked potatoes or nachos.
