In the heart of the Midwest, where the fields stretch out like a patchwork quilt and the mornings are crisp and clear, the tater tot breakfast skillet has become a beloved staple. This dish, with its roots deeply planted in the kitchens of rural America, brings together the comforting flavors of crispy tater tots and rich, runny eggs. It's a dish that speaks to the simplicity and warmth of country living, perfect for those who cherish the slow, peaceful start of a day. Whether you're preparing breakfast for a bustling family or enjoying a quiet morning alone, this skillet offers a hearty, satisfying meal that feels like a warm embrace.
This tater tot breakfast skillet pairs beautifully with a side of fresh fruit, like sliced oranges or a bowl of mixed berries, to add a touch of brightness to your plate. A cup of freshly brewed coffee or a glass of cold milk rounds out the meal perfectly, offering a balance to the rich flavors of the dish. If you're feeling indulgent, a side of crispy bacon or sausage links can complement the skillet nicely, adding an extra layer of savory goodness.
Tater Tot Breakfast Skillet
Servings: 4
Ingredients
4 cups frozen tater tots
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
4 large eggs
Salt and pepper to taste
2 tablespoons chopped chives
Ketchup, for serving
Directions
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
Spread the tater tots evenly on a baking sheet and bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy.
While the tater tots are baking, heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
Crack the eggs into the skillet and cook until the whites are set but the yolks are still runny, about 3-4 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
Once the tater tots are done, transfer them to a serving plate.
Place the cooked eggs on top of the tater tots.
Sprinkle the chopped chives over the eggs and tater tots.
Serve immediately with a side of ketchup.
Variations & Tips
For a cheesy twist, sprinkle shredded cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese over the tater tots before adding the eggs. You can also add cooked bacon or sausage crumbles for extra flavor. If you prefer a spicier kick, try adding a dash of hot sauce or a sprinkle of red pepper flakes. For a more colorful presentation, consider adding diced bell peppers or onions to the skillet when cooking the eggs.
