Cooktop Cove: A friend from China introduced me to this dish, and we've loved it ever since!
By Georgia Lynn
This sweet and savory glazed fried chicken is a comforting dish that brings together the best of Midwestern cooking with a touch of Southern flair. It's a recipe that's been passed down through generations in my family, each time with a little tweak here and there to make it just right. The crispy fried chicken, coated in a luscious glaze, is perfect for Sunday dinners or any time you want to bring a little warmth and nostalgia to your table. The combination of sweet and savory flavors in the glaze is reminiscent of the rich, hearty meals my grandmother used to make, and it's sure to become a favorite in your home too.
This dish pairs beautifully with classic sides like creamy mashed potatoes and buttery corn on the cob. A fresh green salad with a tangy vinaigrette can also balance the richness of the chicken. For a true Midwestern feast, serve it with some homemade biscuits or cornbread to soak up every bit of that delicious glaze.
Sweet and Savory Glazed Fried Chicken
Servings: 4 servings
Ingredients
4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
2 large eggs
1/4 cup milk
Vegetable oil for frying
1/2 cup honey
1/4 cup soy sauce
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon cornstarch
2 tablespoons water
Chopped green onions for garnish
Directions
Place the chicken breasts between two sheets of plastic wrap and gently pound them to an even thickness.
In a shallow dish, combine the flour, salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder.
In another shallow dish, whisk together the eggs and milk.
Dredge each chicken breast in the flour mixture, then dip into the egg mixture, and finally coat again in the flour mixture.
Heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Fry the chicken breasts in the hot oil until golden brown and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes per side. Remove and drain on paper towels.
In a small saucepan, combine the honey, soy sauce, ketchup, and apple cider vinegar. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch and water until smooth. Stir into the sauce and cook until thickened.
Brush the glaze over the fried chicken and garnish with chopped green onions before serving.
Variations & Tips
For a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the flour mixture or a dash of hot sauce to the glaze. You can also use chicken thighs or drumsticks if you prefer dark meat. For a gluten-free version, substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend. Try adding a splash of orange juice to the glaze for a citrusy twist.
