Calamari, a classic dish often enjoyed at seaside restaurants, brings a taste of the ocean to your table. This low-carb version is perfect for those looking to enjoy a crispy, golden treat without the extra carbs. Whether you're hosting a family dinner or a casual get-together with friends, these crispy calamari rings are sure to be a hit. The key to this recipe is using almond flour and Parmesan cheese to create a crunchy coating that mimics traditional breading while keeping it low-carb.
These crispy calamari rings are delightful on their own, but they pair wonderfully with a fresh green salad or some roasted vegetables for a complete meal. You might also consider serving them with a tangy marinara sauce or a creamy garlic aioli for dipping. For a touch of brightness, a squeeze of lemon over the top just before serving can really enhance the flavors.
Low Carb Crispy Calamari Rings
Servings: 4
Ingredients
1 pound calamari rings, cleaned
1 cup almond flour
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon paprika
Salt and pepper to taste
2 large eggs
Oil for frying (such as avocado or coconut oil)
Lemon wedges for serving
Directions
1. In a shallow bowl, combine the almond flour, Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
2. In another bowl, beat the eggs until well mixed.
3. Dip each calamari ring into the egg mixture, allowing any excess to drip off, then coat in the almond flour mixture, pressing gently to adhere.
4. Heat oil in a deep pan over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
5. Fry the calamari rings in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan, for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
6. Remove the calamari rings with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
7. Serve immediately with lemon wedges and your choice of dipping sauce.
Variations & Tips
For a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the almond flour mixture. If you have picky eaters, consider serving the calamari with a variety of dipping sauces, such as ranch or honey mustard, to appeal to different tastes. For a gluten-free version, ensure that all ingredients, especially the Parmesan cheese, are certified gluten-free. You can also experiment with different seasonings, like Italian herbs or lemon zest, to customize the flavor to your liking.
