Cooktop Cove: This ground turkey meal is a real champion
By Robin Donovan
Turkey burgers are a useful standby meal that’s easy to toss together and equally easy to keep low carb. The recipe that follows includes lots of seasonings for a flavorful burger without adding carbs. These make a wonderful family-friendly meal, and you can give the kids buns if they aren’t on the low-carb bandwagon.
I like to add extra toppings to my burgers because my feeling is, the messier a burger is, the more delicious it is. You can add sliced avocado or guacamole, mayonnaise or sour cream, shredded cheese (top the burger while it cooks on the second side if you want the cheese to melt), or pickles or relish. (Just make sure they are sugar free.)

1 1/4 pounds ground turkey
1 1/2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon tamari or soy sauce
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
1/4 onion, finely minced
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon kosher salt
Lettuce leaf wraps
Sliced tomatoes and red onion
Sugar-free ketchup (optional)
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground turkey, mustard, tamari, garlic, Italian seasoning, onion, salt, and pepper and mix well.
Form the mixture into 6 patties, about 3/4-inch thick.
Heat a large grill pan or a grill to medium-high. Spray with cooking spray so burgers don't stick.
Put the patties in the pan or on the grill, and cook for about 4 minutes on each side, until cooked through.
Serve immediately, wrapped in lettuce leaves and topped with slices of tomato, red onion and sugar-free ketchup.
