1 jalapeno, seeded and diced
½ large white onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons chili powder
1 teaspoon ground cumin
½ teaspoon paprika
½ teaspoon ground oregano
½ teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon garlic powder
1 1/3 pounds ground beef
½ tablespoon vegetable oil
4 hamburger buns
4 slices pepper jack cheese
4 leaves butter lettuce
5 thick slices tomato, lightly salted
Mayonnaise and ketchup (optional)
In a large bowl, combine the jalapeno, onion, garlic, Worcestershire, spices and beef. Use your hands to make sure everything is thoroughly combined.
Divide the mixture into four equally-sized balls and shape those balls into patties.
Place a large flat pan or griddle over a medium-high heat.
Use a paper towel to lightly but evenly grease the surface with vegetable oil.
Cook each patty for 3-5 minutes per side depending on your preference.
For the last 2 minutes of cooking, lay a slice of pepper jack cheese on top.
Toast the hamburger buns.
Lightly spread one side of each with mayonnaise if desired. Layer on the patty, tomato, lettuce, and finally the top bun. Serve immediately.
