This slow cooker 4-ingredient hot dog pasta is one of those humble, cozy dinners that takes me right back to childhood. My aunt used to pull this out whenever the grocery budget was tight, and we kids thought it was the best thing ever. It’s incredibly cheap, uses pantry staples, and the slow cooker does all the work. You end up with tender spiral pasta and juicy hot dog slices in a sweet and tangy tomato sauce that feels nostalgic and fun, especially for little ones.
Serve this hot dog pasta straight from the slow cooker with a simple green salad or some steamed frozen veggies on the side to round out the meal. Garlic bread, buttered toast, or even plain saltine crackers work well to soak up the extra sauce. For the kids, offer a little shredded cheese at the table so they can sprinkle it on top if you don’t mind adding a fifth ingredient. A jar of pickles or carrot sticks on the side adds a nice crunchy contrast to the soft, saucy pasta.
Slow Cooker 4-Ingredient Hot Dog PastaServings: 6
Ingredients
1 pound spiral pasta (rotini or similar, uncooked)
1 pound hot dogs, sliced into 1/2-inch rounds
2 (24-ounce) jars sweet and tangy tomato pasta sauce
3 cups water
Directions
Lightly spray the inside of your slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray to help prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
Pour 1 jar of tomato pasta sauce into the bottom of the slow cooker and spread it out evenly with a spoon.
Add the uncooked spiral pasta on top of the sauce, spreading it into an even layer so it’s fairly level.
Scatter the sliced hot dog rounds evenly over the dry pasta so every scoop later will have some pasta and some hot dog pieces.
Pour the second jar of tomato pasta sauce over the hot dogs and pasta, then pour in the 3 cups of water around the edges and over the top.
Gently press down with the back of a spoon to make sure most of the pasta is nestled into the liquid and sauce. Do not stir too much; just make sure the pasta is mostly covered so it cooks evenly.
Cover the slow cooker with the lid and cook on HIGH for 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours, or until the pasta is tender but not mushy. Slow cookers vary, so start checking around 1 hour 30 minutes, giving a gentle stir and making sure there is still enough sauce and the pasta is soft.
Once the pasta is cooked to your liking, give everything a good stir so the hot dogs, pasta, and sauce are well combined and glossy. If the mixture seems too thick, you can stir in a splash of hot water; if it seems too thin, leave the lid off and let it sit on WARM for 5–10 minutes to thicken.
Taste and, if desired, add a pinch of salt or a little extra sweetness with a small spoonful of sugar at the table, keeping in mind this will technically add more ingredients. Serve hot, straight from the slow cooker.
Variations & Tips
If you have room in your budget and don’t mind bending the 4-ingredient rule a little, there are plenty of ways to make this your own. For cheesier bowls, let everyone sprinkle their own shredded cheddar or mozzarella on top at the table so you can still keep the base recipe simple and budget-friendly. For picky eaters, choose milder hot dogs and a smooth, plain tomato pasta sauce with no chunks. If your kids like a little sweetness, stir in a teaspoon of sugar or a drizzle of ketchup at the table. To sneak in a bit of extra nutrition, you can use whole wheat or high-protein pasta, just keep an eye on the cooking time since it can soften differently. If your slow cooker tends to run hot, check earlier and add a splash more water if the edges dry out. For a slightly smoky flavor, use smoked hot dogs or sausage-style hot dogs. You can also double the recipe for a crowd as long as your slow cooker is large enough; just keep the same ratio of sauce and water to pasta and plan on a few extra minutes of cooking time, checking and stirring near the end so the pasta cooks evenly.
