This 4-ingredient slow cooker vintage summer supper is the kind of easy, hearty meal that saves the day when the kitchen already feels warm and nobody wants the oven on. It leans on that old-fashioned supper idea of letting a few simple pantry staples slowly cook into something rich and comforting, with tender fibrous protein chunks soaking up a glossy savory sauce while you get on with the rest of the day.
Serve this over mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, rice, or thick slices of toast to catch every bit of the savory reduction. For a lighter summer plate, pair it with sliced tomatoes, green beans, corn on the cob, or a crisp cucumber salad, and if you want to stretch the meal for a family table, a bowl of coleslaw or a simple fruit salad fits right in.

Variations & Tips
For extra flavor: Add a splash of Worcestershire-style sauce or a spoonful of mustard to the sauce mixture if you have it on hand. Even though the base recipe keeps things very simple, that little extra can give the gravy a deeper, old-fashioned supper flavor.
For picky eaters: Serve the tender protein and sauce over noodles or mashed potatoes and keep any vegetables on the side. That way everyone can build their own plate, which always helps at my table when somebody wants the meal plain and familiar.
For a thicker sauce: If you like more of a gravy texture, remove the lid during the last 20 to 30 minutes of cooking so the sauce can reduce a bit more. You can also stir the finished dish gently so the tender pieces coat evenly in the glossy sauce.
To round out the meal: Stir in sliced mushrooms or onions during the first hour of cooking if you want to stretch the dish a little. It is also lovely with peas added at the end for a softer, more family-style summer supper.
