Ranch chicken with potatoes

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 ½ pounds chicken thighs, bone in, skin on
Salt and pepper
2 pounds new potatoes, cut into 1-inch cubes
1 1-ounce packet ranch dressing mix
3 tablespoons salted butter
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until it shimmers. Season the chicken with salt and pepper and cook, until browned on both sides, about 8 minutes.
Arrange the potatoes in an even layer in the slow cooker and sprinkle half of the ranch seasoning. Pour the butter over the potatoes, and then top with the browned chicken thighs. Sprinkle the remaining seasoning on top of the chicken.
